What’s on your iPod?
What does your iPod say about you?
It sounds like a dissertation topic. Or the key piece of evidence in a tv crime show.
But seriously, can we learn stuff about a person by shuffling through their cd’s? It seems plausible. Right?
I’ve been obsessed with collecting music for as far back as I can remember. But, when I got an iPod last year for my birthday, the obsession exploded. Finding a new sound or artist or song or genre is like a feast for my ears. It’s like traveling, reading a book, having a conversation, seeing a piece of art and watching a movie, all rolled into one. Old stuff, new stuff, new takes on old stuff, stuff people have forgotten, stuff people can’t forget. All of it. I love it.
Songs in wrapped in garbage bags behind dumpsters in old dark alleys. Songs floating around in fields with summertime dandelion fuzz. Songs that flood. Songs that sizzle. Songs that liberate, intoxicate, infuriate… give me all of them! I want them all!
So far my music library has reached 9,000 songs. I’ve burned every cd I own, swiped some from friends, copied cds from my siblings – anywhere I can find stuff, I try to capture it. A few months ago my laptop ran out of space and I went out and got an external hard drive to store music on. It’s a good thing I’m out of money now, because I’d probably spend a fortune on iTunes.com.
